The JV Lady Leopards truly showed the heart of a champion in the win over Community. Despite an 0-3 deficit, the Lady Leopards didn’t quit. Allysa Holstead kept the Leopards in the game from the circle and the defense didn’t allow any big innings for Community. In fact, the only runs scored for Community were single runs in the first three innings and then they were shut down.
In this contest, it was the bottom of the batting order who came in clutch to get on base and the top of the order rallied behind them. Grace Nguyen started off the 3rd inning with a double down the 3rd base line and Sevin Newport walked. Both advanced bases either by a passed ball on the catcher or a stolen base. Nguyen scored on a wild pitch and with Newport at 3rd, Madison Kohl slapped to short, scored Newport and was safe at first. The Lady Leopards went into the 4th inning only down by 1 run.
Holstead and the Leopard defense took down the Community hitters in order in the 4th with a fly ball to Grace Nguyen, fly ball to Shay Mater, and a fly ball to Rachel Hoeffner. Now it was Lovejoy’s turn. With 2 outs and down by 1 run, Dolberry put the ball in play and caused a Community error. She stole 2nd base, 3rd base, and scored on a second error by the Community defense on a ball in play by Nguyen. Tessa Salcedo-Garcia hit a single scoring Nguyen and Hoeffner walked. Back to back hits by Madison Kohl and Shay Mater, a walk to Stevie Williams, and an error by the shortstop scored the next 3 runs. This was all the Lady Leopards needed to seal the deal against Community.
Offensive leaders included:
Madison Kohl – 2 hits, 1 run, 2 stolen bases, 1 RBI
Katie Dolberry – 1 run, 2 stolen bases
Grace Nguyen – 2 runs, 1 double, 1 stolen base
