It is the expectation of the LISD Athletics Department that an athlete will not miss an athletic practice or contest except in the event of illness, family emergency or tutoring. All athlete absences should be unavoidable. Unless there are extenuating circumstances, injured athletes are expected to attend all practices and contests. Repeated absences may result in dismissal from an athletic team.
It is the responsibility of LISD coaches to verify that the absentee procedures are adhered to by Lovejoy athletes. Except in an emergency situation, contacts regarding any absence should be made prior to the actual absence occurring. All parent notes and tutoring passes must be kept on file by the Head Coach.
Student athletes must attend classes for at least one-half day in order to participate in any extracurricular activity, sport, or contest during the school day or in the evening. This is a Lovejoy Athletics Rule. If a student is too ill to attend school, he/she is too ill to compete in an athletic contest. Exceptions to this rule due to extenuating circumstances must have the approval of LISD Athletic Director.
Athlete absence due to illness
If it is necessary for an athlete to miss a practice or game for any reason except a diagnosed injury by the LISD Athletic Trainer, the following procedure must be followed:
Prior to any student athlete’s absence, the athlete himself/herself or the parent of the absent athlete must do one or more of the following:
Provide a note to the Head Coach, email the Head Coach, call the Head Coach or call the Athletic Department and leave a message for the Head Coach. Failure to do so will result in an automatic unexcused absence from athletics. The Head Coach will determine if absences are excused or unexcused.
Athletes, rather than parents, should handle communication regarding absences whenever possible.
A student athlete who arrives at practice “not feeling well” will report to the LISD Trainer and the Trainer will make the decision regarding whether he/she will practice. A student needing to report to the Trainer for evaluation must report to the LHS Training Room by 7:00 AM.
Athlete absence due to tutoring
If an athlete must miss practice for a tutoring session, he/she must report to practice and receive a tutoring pass from the Head Coach. It is the student’s responsibility to obtain the teacher’s signature on the pass and then return it to the Head Coach during the same day. Failure to do so will result in an unexcused absence from athletics. All tutoring passes must be signed by the Head Coach and teacher and remain on file with the Head Coach through the end of a competition season.
Athlete absence due to vacation
Athlete absences due to vacations during a sport’s competition season are discouraged. Vacation dates should be communicated to the Head Coach as soon as the conflict becomes apparent. An athlete whose vacation date(s) may result in a potential absence must be informed by the Head Coach of any consequences of such absence prior to the vacation. In the event of an absence due to an unavoidable vacation, an athlete must practice a minimum of one day for each practice or contest missed due to vacation prior to being allowed to resume competition. The preceding rule must be communicated to the athlete prior to his/her vacation absence.
All athletic absences, excused or unexcused, require after-practice conditioning due to missed workout time.
