Girls Varsity Softball · Varsity Softball Loses a Close One to Mt. Pleasant

The Lady Leopards finished out preseason play at Mt. Pleasant.  Lovejoy scored 4 runs on 5 hits and committed 2 errors in the field.  Mt. Pleasant scored 6 runs on 8 hits and committed 4 errors.  Sydney Provence got the start in the circle with Celeste Soliz behind the plate.

Lovejoy put 2 runs on the board early.  Mackenzie Mitchell reached first base on a error by the shortstop, stole 2nd base, and was hit in by Leah Taylor on a line drive single to left center.  The Mt. Pleasant pitcher struggled early in the game and with bases loaded with Leah Taylor, Delaney DiCristofaro, and Madeline Robinson, Celeste Soliz was walked and Taylor came in to score.   On defense, Mitchell in centerfield made the first out of the half inning and Taylor was hit 2 ground balls to get the other outs in the inning.  The first ground ball was thrown to DiCristofaro at 3rd base on a fielder’s choice and the second was thrown to Rebecca Holiman at 1st base.

Lovejoy was unable to produce in the top of the 2nd, but lights out defense sent the Mt. Pleasant hitters down in order in the bottom of the inning.  Provence threw 11 pitches in the inning to Soliz and those pitches were enough for a 1-2-3 down in order.  Madeline Robinson in left field caught a fly ball for the first out, Taylor at shortstop fielding a ground ball and threw to Holiman for the second out, and Holiman caught a foul pop up for the last out.

Lovejoy kept the 2-0 lead until the bottom of the 3rd inning.  The Lady Leopards had an error, gave up a double, and a home run for the Lady Tigers to take a 3-2 lead.

Bailey Bradshaw hit clutch in the top of the 4th with a single to right field.  Holly Massey followed with a walk.  Mitchell put down a push bunt that resulted in an error from the third baseman and Bradshaw scored from second base to tie the game 3-3.  Carlee Schaeffer hit a single to center field scoring Bradshaw and taking the Lady Leopards to a 4-3 lead entering the bottom of the inning.  Unfortunately for Lovejoy, Mt. Pleasant was able to score 2 runs on a double and retake the lead 4-5.

Lovejoy was unable to score again and Mt. Pleasant scored another run in the bottom of the 5th inning to extend the lead to 4-6.

Offensively, Mitchell had 1 hit, 2 stolen bases, and scored twice.  Schaeffer had 1 hit, 1 stolen base, and drew 1 walk.  Taylor had 2 hits, 2 RBI, drew a walk, had 1 stolen base, and scored once.  DiCristofaro drew a walk.  Robinson drew 2 walks.  Soliz drew a walk and had an RBI.  Bradshaw had 1 hit and scored a run.  Massey drew a walk.

Sydney Provence pitched three and two thirds innings giving up 5 runs on 6 hits, 2 earned runs, 2 walks, and had 1 strikeout.  Bailey Bradshaw came in for relief and threw the last two and one third innings giving up 1 run on 2 hits, 1 earned run, and 2 walks.

Lovejoy finishes preseason play with a 3-13 record, but don’t discount the Lady Leopards just yet.  Lovejoy is lead by strong senior leaders and underclassman who played a tough preseason schedule.  The Lady Leopards will enter district play at home on Tuesday against Wylie East hungry to defeat their first district competitor.
