The Leopard Men’s Golf Team traveled to Texarkana Country Club this weekend, October 13th and 14th, to compete in the Tiger Classic, a 54-hole event, hosted by Texas High School. The golf course was very difficult, and the competition was strong. The field at “The Classic” featured 16 teams from around the state including some of the perennial powers like Highland Park, Southlake, Jesuit, Trinity Christian, Flower Mound Marcus, Mckinney Boyd, Rockwall, Byron Nelson, JJ Pearce, and others. This is always one of the most competitive tournaments of the year.
Friday included a continuous, morning and afternoon, round of 36 holes. The guys got a taste of marathon golf, as it was very difficult playing without a break, and eating on the run all day. Round 1 the guys shot a team total 339. Freshman, Jay Pabin led the way for the Leopards with a 79. Jonah Barton posted an 83. Will Fairchild shot 88, and Brian Wolfe followed with an 89.
Round 2 saw temperatures in the low 90’s and very little wind, but scores improved as a whole. The team score improved by 10 shots, posting a total 329. Jay Pabin followed his morning 79 with another 79. His 158 total was good for 30th place. Jonah Barton’s afternoon was good for an 82. Brian Wolfe bettered his morning round by 5, posting an 84. Matthew Welch shot an 84 counting as the fourth score for the afternoon.
The two round total, 668, left us in 14th place. Saturday we played the 13th place team, Pleasant Grove, in match play. With Texarkana Country Club being their home course, we were at slight disadvantage. The team lost 3 matches to 2. Brian took his match to 16 holes, losing 3 and 2, Jonah struggled losing 6 and 5, and Matt lost 1 down in 18 holes. Will won his match 8 and 7. Jay won his match 3 and 2. For never seeing the course, I think we performed well. I know we feel we could have been better, but I am satisfied with the weekend.
