Our varsity boys took on Tanglewood Resort and Golf Club, Monday, October 2nd, in the Denison High School Stinger Classic. This was the first tournament of the year for the guys, and they played well enough to bring home the win. I chose this tournament because none of our guys have played the golf course. I wanted them to have to handle a completely new experience. They were not used to the type of grass that was on the greens, so putting was a challenge. The wind strengthened all day, making it more difficult.
The guys all realized they could have been better. I think anytime you can walk away knowing your mistakes, and having an idea as to how to fix the issues you improve. We have a long season ahead of us, and the guys know this, and they believe we will improve as we go.
The Leopards shot a team total, 332, good enough for 1st place. Pottsboro shot 334. Plano East shot 337. Leading the Leopards was Freshman, Jay Pabin. In his first high school tournament he finished 3rd individually, shooting a 77. He started a bit nervously going 6 over after his first 7 holes. He settled down nicely to play his last 11 holes in 1 under par. Senior, Will Fairchild shot 83 in his first Lovejoy High School tournament. Senior, Jonah Barton, shot 85. Junior, Matthew Welch shot 87. Senior, Weston Ludlow shot 90. And Junior, Brian Wolfe shot 91.
The guys play in Texarkana, October 13th and 14th. This is a big tournament and we are looking forward to growing from the experience.
