Each week the Lovejoy Athletic Department will feature the outstanding contributions from a member of our coaching staff. We appreciate the time, dedication, and the leadership that they invest in our student-athletes. This week’s Spotlight is on veteran Lovejoy teacher and coach, Mary Ellen Burns.
High School Attended: Rider High School
College Attended: Midwestern State University
How many years have you coached and what schools have you coached at? I have coached a total 15 years. My coaching at Lovejoy has been at WSMS and LHS.
What sports do you coach? I have coached volleyball, basketball, track, and softball.
What is the best part of coaching in Lovejoy? The best part of coaching is the molding of a young athlete and watching them gain confidence and success.
What is one of your most memorable moments in coaching? My most memorable moments in coaching are when the team pulls together to support all of their members and works to the finish.
Who is your favorite athlete and why? Larry Bird is one of my favorite athletes. He states that “A winner is someone who recognizes his God-given talents, works his tail off to develop them into skills and uses these skills to accomplish his/her goals.”
What do you like to do outside of work? I love to spend time with my family, read, workout and take walks.
What is the best part of being a coach? The best part of being a coach is seeing the end result of all the hard work the student-athletes give throughout the season.
