The Lovejoy Cross Country Team traveled to Old Settlers Park in Round Rock, TX for the 2016 UIL State Cross Country Championships and came out victorious. The boys’ team won the 2016 5A Boys State Title with a score of 59 points. The #2 ranked team, Donna North, finished 2nd overall with 103 points, and the #3 ranked team, Grapevine, finished 3rd overall with 139 points. The State Championship Team from 2015, Frisco Wakeland, placed 4th overall with 155 points. The Lovejoy Boys were the State Runner Up in 2015 and entered the 2016 season ranked as the #1 team for 5A Boys. The boys’ team maintained their #1 ranking the entire season. Lovejoy Boys last won the State Championship in 2010 when they were in the 3A Division (now 4A under UIL’s reclassification alignment in 2014). This is also the 4th State Championship for the Lovejoy Cross Country program under the direction of Head Coach Greg Christensen.
Lovejoy’s top 6 boys all ran 16:17 or faster on the 5K course and had a team spread of only 21 seconds for their 1st through 5th runners. Leading the way once again for the boys’ team was senior Grant Tiff. The SFA commit finished 15th overall with a personal best time of 15:52. Tiff’s 15th place finish earned him CCCAT All State Team honors for the second time in his high school career. Tiff placed 5th overall in 2015 and earned CCCAT All State Team honors.
Coming in 2nd for the team for the first time in his career was sophomore Brett Pedersen. Brett finished 20th overall with a personal best time of 16:00. The 3rd runner to cross the finish line for Lovejoy was freshman standout Brady Laboret. Laboret also ran a personal best time of 16:03, finishing 21st overall. Lovejoy’s 4th and 5th runners, Ryan Brands and Bradley Davis, also ran personal best times finishing in 16:09 (25th overall) and 16:13 (28th overall) respectively.
Junior Ryan Spruell finished with a personal best time of 16:17 and 35th overall. Spruell demonstrated Lovejoy’s strength and depth as he finished in front of Donna North’s 3rd runner, who placed 46th overall.
Finishing out for the boys’ team was senior and captain, Nathan Hartter. Hartter ran a time of 17:15 and finished 116th overall. Hartter’s leadership and work ethic over the past four years has been an immeasurable contribution to the team’s development and success.

Sophomore Carson Hockersmith competed in the 5A Girls Division as an individual state qualifier from the Region II Championships. Hockersmith placed 66th overall with a personal best time of 16:39. Hockersmith worked diligently throughout the 2016 to overcome a stress fracture that was suffered at the beginning of the summer. This marked the first time for Hockersmith to compete in the UIL State Championship, and she plans to return for her junior and senior years.
