Multiple Teams · Lovejoy Wrestling places 7 at Regional Championship, 4 automatic state qualifiers!

Lovejoy’s men and women’s wrestling teams battled it out in Bryan with the rest of a very tough Regional competition this past Friday and Saturday. The Leopards had 10 men and 4 women who wrestled in the tournament–seven of which placed, with 4 qualifying automatically for the state tournament!!  Our men’s team ended up finishing 7th overall out of 31 teams and our women’s team (only four wrestlers!!) finished 8th overall out of 33 teams!!

Freshmen Lilly Musselman and Morgan Elvin (pictured above) wrestled great tournaments, winning matches to put them into the Regional championship matches at their weight.  They become the second and third freshmen ever to qualify and wrestle in the State tournament in Lovejoy history!

Junior Dylan South (pictured above wrestling earlier this month) becomes the fourth underclassmen in Lovejoy’s men’s program history to qualify for the state tournament.  South had a couple of big wins Saturday morning to set up his state birth.

Senior Tom Elvin (pictured above) becomes the only wrestler in Lovejoy history to qualify for the state tournament multiple times!  Elvin runs his Lovejoy single season best record to 42-4 with his regional final finish. He lost a close regional championship by a 5-3 decision.  Elvin has placed in every tournament this season and looks to keep that streak alive next week at state.

Sophomore James Ayers, wrestling in his first regional tournament, placed 5th and won some key matches to get there.  Ayers is a state alternate and will continue his training for next week’s state tournament.

Senior Logan Hubble finished in 5th place, his second year in a row to become a regional placer, making him only the third Lovejoy wrestler to be a multi-time regional placer (Elvin and Haden would be the other two).  Hubble will also continue to train for the state tournament next week.

Finally, Senior Connor Haden placed 4th for the second straight year, however, lost a tough challenge match to make him the alternate at this weight class.  Haden makes Lovejoy history along with Elvin and Hubble as one of only three Lovejoy wrestlers to be a multiple time regional place winner.  Haden will also continue to train for the state tournament next week.

Good luck to all of these wrestlers next week at the Berry Center in Cypress at the State Championships!
