Multiple Teams · Lovejoy Men’s Wrestling Finished Runner-up in tough District 9-5A Championship!

The Men’s Wrestling team finished in second place yesterday in the District 9-5A Wrestling Championship.  Lovejoy trailed only Rockwall Heath in the tough district of 8 teams.

This is the highest placement by a Leopard wrestling team in history.  The Leopards also qualified its highest amount of wrestlers for the regional tournament in its history (13).  Lovejoy finished with 11 automatic qualifiers (top 4) and two alternates.  All 14 Leopard wrestlers placed in the tournament, also a first time for Lovejoy.

Leading the team with his first individual district championship was senior Logan Hubble.  Hubble won his finals match by a 5-2 decision over his Wylie opponent.

Five other Leopard wrestlers were in the finals, falling just short of the championship.  Placing second were:  James Ayers, Patrick Jones, Zach McCormick, Dylan South, and Tom Elvin.

Finishing with the bronze medal was senior Alek Milewski.  Milewski won his medal match in dominant fashion, grinding out a 4-0 win over his Wylie opponent.

Finishing in 4th place for Lovejoy were Adam Dziubinski, Connor Haden, and Bumper Pool.  All three of these wrestlers automatically advanced to the regional tournament.

Jackson Rexford, Layton Kerr, and Mason Mitchell all placed 5th yesterday.  Rexford and Kerr will be regional alternates next week.  Mitchell won a “challenge” mat for advancement to the regional tournament by defeating the 4th place wrestler.  Mitchell won by pin in exciting fashion to punch his ticket to the regional tournament!

Finally, placing 6th in a tough bracket was Kitrell Phillips.

The men’s varsity team will travel to Bryan for the Region 3-5A Championship next weekend.  The tourney will be held on February 12-13 at Bryan HS.  Good luck to all Leopard wrestlers in their ongoing quest for a state championship!

The Leopard JV will compete in the JV District tournament on Tuesday February 9th at Wylie HS.  Wrestling will begin at 10:30 am.  Good luck to our JV wrestlers!
